Designing for the Little Guys

March 22, 2016bowerbirdblog

When we started BowerBird, one thing became instantly clear to us; our focus was not on the big architecture and design firms, it was on small, passionate creatives.

In a world of media where ‘who you know’ can seem more important than ‘what you do’, we wanted to help small-to-medium sized practices share their stories with journalists from across the globe, but most importantly, to connect with writers and editors in their own countries, cities, and towns.

Here’s two of the ways we’ve tried to do this…

Design

This focus on smaller practices is at the core of every design decision we make. For instance, rather than developing an app for PR and Comms people, we’ve stripped it back to its bare essentials so you can do it all yourself – we help you to compile images, text and other info, then connect you with the journalists who want to share your work.

You don’t need to be a wordsmith, or create a ‘pitch’, you simply add your content to a kit, answer some questions and BowerBird will find the best people for you to reach out to.

We believe that you shouldn’t need a Communications degree to share your story – that’s what journalists are for.

Price

When it comes to price, there’s never a clear answer – what’s right for one person isn’t necessarily right for the next. To be honest, it can sometimes feel like black magic. So it’s something we’ve thought long and hard about. What we landed on was a pricing model that was both sustainable for us and fair to our customers – and it needed to be accessible to even the smallest of practices.

When we launch in a few weeks’ time, you’ll be able to create media kits (or BowerKits as we call them) completely free. Only when you’re ready to share your first BowerKit do you need to pay ($29/month) to access the world’s architecture and design media. We’re hoping that this model gives value to all our users, while also allowing us to spend more time growing and developing BowerBird.

We can’t wait to show you how we can help even the smallest practices to share their ideas. Nic and I are always here to help with any questions you might have. Shoot us an email here and we’ll get back before you know it!
